Your meter records how much power your home uses every 15 minutes. We price every plan on those readings once you share them, and on an estimate until then.

The fee for leaving early
Leaving a contract early can cost an early-termination fee. We take it off the saving, and tell you if waiting until you can leave free saves more.
After you switch
We check your first bill against your new plan, and email you before the plan ends.
Four ways a plan looks cheap and isn't.
Use one kilowatt-hour too little, and lose the whole credit.
A bill credit is money off your bill in any month you use at least a set amount of power, counted in kilowatt-hours (kWh). Use less, and you get nothing. Watch an example year.
Twelve monthly totals against a 1,000 kWh credit line. 6 of 12 months fall below it and earn no credit: Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Oct, Nov. That is $450 in credits never paid.
Free nights, expensive days
A free-nights plan charges more during the day to pay for the free hours. It saves money only if your home uses a lot at night.
The advertised-price trick
Every plan has an Electricity Facts Label (EFL). It shows the plan's price at three amounts of use: 500, 1,000 and 2,000 kWh a month. Your home uses its own amount, and the EFL doesn't show the price there.
The price after your contract ends
When a contract ends, your plan moves to a month-to-month rate the provider can raise any month. We track your end date and your fee-free window, the days when you can switch without a fee.
Solar panels or an electric car?
We count them.
Many solar and car-charging plans advertise a price that assumes you send back, or charge, the same amount every month. Power to Choose shows that price. We price every one sold at your address on your own meter readings once you share them.

Electric cars
We find your car's charging in your meter readings. A plan with a charging credit earns it on the charging inside its hours, marked as an estimate.

Do I have to pay to see my assessment?
No, your assessment is free: whether to switch, stay or wait, and what your current plan costs you. Pay $5 to see the recommended plan, once per home per 30-day shopping window. Whiz+ and Whiz Pro, when they open, will add alerts through the year, a detailed usage dashboard and chat.
How do you make money?
Kilowhiz charges customers an unlock fee of $5, once per home per 30-day shopping window. Some electricity providers pay Kilowhiz when you enroll in one of their plans through our partner link. Today those providers are Chariot Energy, True Power and Payless Power.When a provider pays us for a switch through our link, that plan says so and opens free. The payment never moves a plan in the ranking. The whole policy.
Why charge for the unlock?
So that what a provider pays us never decides which plan we recommend. Providers pay the free comparison sites that list them, and the plan at the top is often the one that pays most. You see whether you'd save, and how much, before you pay $5.
Do you need my utility password?
No: you tap Confirm on a notice from Texas utilities' official meter system, Smart Meter Texas (SMT), on our page or in its email. We can read your meter readings and nothing else, so we can't switch your provider. You can stop sharing any time.
How long does it take?
A few minutes: add your address and a recent bill, tap Confirm on Smart Meter Texas's notice, then add your plan's EFL or pick it from a list. Your readings usually arrive within minutes.
What if I should stay on my current plan?
Then your assessment tells you to stay, free, with the numbers that show why. Sometimes the right answer is to do nothing.
What if my contract hasn't ended?
We take your early-termination fee (ETF) off the saving. If it saves more to wait until you can leave without the fee, we tell you to wait, and until what day.
Do you switch my plan for me?
No. You sign up on the provider's own site and press its last button yourself. We show you each step and check today's price first.
Can I check the math?
Yes: every number has a receipt showing the rate, the credits you did or didn't earn, and your utility's delivery charges: what the utility charges to bring power to your home. We also rebuild your last bill so you can compare it with the real one. The full method is on the methodology page.
